Although fingerstyle guitar playing encompasses any way of playing guitar that uses fingers rather than pick, we often think of Travis style playing when we think of that classic fingerstyle sound.
Travis picking is based around regular patterns played with the right hand. It’s a great accompaniment to singing or ensemble playing and creates a texture that can at times sound like there’s more than one person playing.
Although you can make Travis style playing elaborate, at the core it’s a simple principle, and your right hand will quickly build in coordination and speed if you play these patterns consistently.
Remember to be mindful of technique and rhythm – if you get these right at slow tempos, your playing will sound great at fast tempos too.
