Congratulations on learning a lot more about the elements of style in vocal performances!
You now possess an understanding some of the technical aspects that affect the vocal sound produced, and you have a breakdown of how to develop your style in the direction you want. Your ability to make adjustments is only ever as refined as the level of sensitivity at which you can notice detail, and the material in this topic has refined the level of detail at which you can analyse vocal performances and make adjustments in your own interpretations.
This week:
- Pick one lick, run, trill or ornament from the series in week 2. You’ll continue working with this over the next few weeks. You’ll get a soundtrap link with the different style exercises in there so that you can isolate it and record yourself.
- If you spent the last few sessions on particular songs, move on to new choices from your list, making sure you have a reference recording of the ones you’ve been working on recently.
- Work on the compound licks from this session. After warming up, go for 20-30 reps slow and then 20 fast. Repeat if you like – after a few days of doing this you will see it become much easier. 30 reps sounds like a lot but each rep is only a few seconds.
Your soundtrap link for recording licks, runs and trills is here.
