Part one looks at the difference between the pulse (the regular beat that goes through the music) and the rhythm (which is organised around the pulse, but isn’t always the same thing). We look at some easy ways to train your ability to identify the pulse and to start training your right arm to synchronise with the pulse.

Watch the video, and then use the training audio to sharpen your ability to find the pulse. Don’t worry about using a guitar to begin with – just listen, and as the audio moves between different songs at different speeds, locate the pulse each time tapping your foot or hand in time. Dancing is also allowed.

Whenever you hear music over the next few days, focus your attention on identifying the regular pulse. It will soon become familiar to you to do this. The long term benefits of doing so are enormous – your timing and rhythm will really improve.
